This 5-day HETAS training course is ideal for anyone looking to become a HETAS-registered installer, without prior experience.
It is a combination of three courses and comprises of the following: core knowledge, chimneys and flues, dry appliance installation and practical.
Upon successful completion, you’ll be eligible to register with HETAS under their Competent Person Scheme for the relevant course modules.

Core Knowledge
This is the entry module of all HETAS courses, it is also suitable for anyone interested in solid fuel, wood & biomass technology. If you have no previous experience in the solid fuel sector this is a good place to start.

- Fuel Types and Storage
- Combustion

- Permanent Air Supply Requirements
- Function & Working Principles of a Chimney
Chimneys and Flues
This is a fundamental module to progress to other modules to gain entry to the Competent Person Scheme (CPS).
Course Content:
- Definitions and Principles
- Types & Installation Requirements
- Protection of Building and Occupants
- Lining & Relining of Existing Chimneys
- Connection of Appliances to Chimney/Flue Systems
- Design Requirements
- Inspection, Cleaning & Testing of Solid Fuel Appliances & Associated Flue Systems
- Diagnosing & Rectifying Chimney Faults
Dry Appliance Installer
This teaches the fundamental skills and knowledge to undertake the installation of solid fuel and biomass dry appliances to gain entry to the Competent Person Scheme (CPS).
Course Content:
- Operating principles of dry solid fuel and biomass wood appliances
- Appliance selection and determination of minimum operating efficiencies
- Suitability testing and fault diagnosis for chimneys and flue systems
- Requirements and suitability checks for hearths and fire surrounds
- Identification of unsafe situations and correct response
- Installation requirements and practical installation competence
- Commissioning requirements and verification checks
- Handover of an installed appliance, including user briefing and documentation
PracticalÂ
Hands-on practice applying the skills learned.
Outcome: Upon successful completion of each course, you will receive the corresponding certification and become eligible to register with the HETAS Competent Person Scheme for that module.
