This 3-day HETAS course combines training for dry stove installations with chimney system installation. It covers the following HETAS modules: core knowledge, dry appliance installation and chimneys/flues (formerly H003DS & H006).

It equips candidates with the knowledge and skills required to work safely and competently in the solid fuel and wood-burning sector.

The course covers all relevant Building Regulations and British Standards and enables candidates to install common types of dry solid fuel and wood-burning appliances, including log-burning and multifuel stoves. It also includes training on twin wall rigid system chimneys required for installations that penetrate ceilings or roofs.

Course Content

  • Legislation, regulations and industry guidance
  • Environmental considerations and fuel types/storage
  • Combustion principles and carbon monoxide awareness
  • Permanent air supply requirements
  • Function, operation and selection of dry solid fuel and biomass appliances, including minimum efficiency standards
  • Suitability testing, fault diagnosis and identifying unsafe situations
  • Installation requirements for appliances, hearths, fire surrounds and chimneys/flue systems
  • Lining, relining and connection of existing chimneys
  • Commissioning, verification checks and handover procedures including user briefing and documentation
  • Inspection, cleaning, testing, and maintenance of solid fuel appliances and flue systems
  • Diagnosing and rectifying chimney faults

Entry Requirements

Candidates must have one of the following:

  • Evidence of Gas Safe Registration
  • Evidence of OFTEC Registration
  • Practical work experience on solid fuel appliances:

Documentation including HETAS registration numbers (or alternatively, Building Control Notification Documentation, including numbers) from at least 3 installations the candidate has completed. Photographic evidence of on-the-job experience is also required, with at least 3 images.

Additionally, a cover letter from a HETAS-registered installer is required, confirming the candidate has worked alongside them on at least 3 properties, including details of the installations.

If the candidate cannot provide the above evidence, they must complete the HETAS Beginners Course. This course is designed for those with little/no industry experience and can be booked here.

Qualification: Candidates who successfully complete the course will receive HETAS certification, which is required to register on the HETAS Competent Person Scheme for the installation of dry appliances.
