The Future of Heating Is Here: Notes from the Installer Show 2025
July 11, 2025In today’s blog, we break down the Q2 2025 MCS data (spoiler, it’s even more confirmation that the renewable sector is gathering serious pace.) Whether you’re on the fence about retraining or already working in the industry, the numbers don’t lie: the UK’s shift to low-carbon technologies is accelerating, and there’s never been a better time to get qualified.
77,656 Installations: The Market Isn’t Slowing Down
Between April and June 2025, the UK recorded 77,656 MCS-certified installations across heat pumps, solar PV, and battery storage, a testament to both domestic and commercial adoption. That brings the number of certified contractors to 5,471 and 75,080 certified products on the market.
Compare that with Q1, and we’re seeing consistency and sustained, healthy momentum. From the data. This is a market that’s maturing, not just a flash in the pan.
Heat Pump Installations Hold Firm
Q2 saw 14,436 certified heat pump installs completed by 2,153 contractors, with over 3,500 approved product models available. While slightly lower than Q1’s 15,457 installs, this is still a huge number (especially when we consider where things were just a few years ago) and reflects seasonal patterns more than a drop in demand.
Consumer confidence in heat pumps continues to grow, supported by: The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, lower operating costs vs gas, cleaner and more efficient installs (helped by more competent installers.)
It’s a clear sign that this isn’t just a trend, it’s a permanent fixture in UK heating and it’s being widely adopted by households and businesses.

Solar PV Leads the Charge
No surprises here, solar PV continues to dominate as the most established technology. With 55,655 installations and 4,222 certified installers in Q2, the sector remains the most accessible entry point for many electrical contractors.Consumers no longer need convincing of the technology’s effectiveness, which is exactly why it remains so popular.
To compare:
- Q1 2025: 57,039 installs
- Q2 2025: 55,655 installs
A marginal dip, but still well over 100,000 installs in the first half of 2025 alone. That’s a huge market, and it’s far from saturated.

Battery Storage Keeps Building
Battery storage continues its breakout year with 8,565 certified installs in Q2 and 2,312 certified installers, both up from Q1.
In fact:
- Q1 installs: 8,047
- Q2 installs: 8,565 (that’s +6.4% growth quarter-on-quarter.)
What’s behind this?
- Agile tariffs and time-of-use incentives
- Consumer awareness of energy independence
- Pairing with solar PV makes the ROI even stronger

What This Means for You
If you’re a heating engineer, sparky, or tradesperson watching this play out from the sidelines, don’t.
This isn’t early adoption anymore. This is the new standard. Every quarter, more properties are being fitted with renewables, and more contractors are profiting. If you’re not MCS-aligned and certified, you’re going to be boxed out of funded work and left behind.
And we don’t want that for you.
Train with GRE Energy Training
At GRE, we make it easy to level up. All our BPEC courses are mapped to current MCS standards and delivered by trainers who’ve been on the tools.
Popular options include:
- BPEC Level 3 Heat Pump Systems (Air & Ground Source) Grant Funded
- BPEC Solar PV Installer & Battery Storage (Level 3)
Each course blends classroom theory with hands-on, practical install work, so you leave ready to quote real jobs, not just pass exams.
The Takeaway
The Q2 MCS numbers confirm it: demand is growing, quality is rising, and opportunities are everywhere. Whether it’s solar, batteries, or heat pumps, one thing is clear, certified and competent installers are in demand more than ever.
