Start at Home: Giving First-Time Heat Pump Installers a Real Start
July 21, 2025In today’s blog, we’re reflecting on the Installer Show 2025, an event that marked a turning point for the heating and renewables industry. It was a stark reminder of just how fast the sector is evolving, and how essential it is to keep pace with change. It’s always amazing to see how much the show continues to grow year-on-year, and it reinforces that what we’re doing at GRE is making a real impact out there.
This year, two members of the GRE Energy Training team, Jenna (Business Development Manager) and Dean (Technical Director and Lead Heating Trainer) were there in person to take it all in and rub elbows with installers and manufacturers. Below is Jenna’s own personal account of the show, followed by wider reflections on how GRE is adapting to meet the demands of a fast-changing industry, and how you can capitalise on this opportunity.
From Jenna: Business Development Manager, GRE Energy Training
“We had a fantastic time attending the Installer Show at the NEC in Birmingham last week, with over 800 exhibitors in attendance across three halls. It is an event we always look forward to and even more so this year after learning the scale of it, knowing it was set to be the biggest and best show yet. As always, it was fascinating to see what industry leaders are up to and there certainly was a lot to take in – and a lot to be inspired by.
It was a great opportunity to explore the latest cutting-edge technology and to see with our own eyes how quickly things are evolving – and just how bright the future is. Reconnecting with some of our past students was a major highlight for us, finding out how far they’ve come and hearing about the great work they’re doing in the field.
Heat pumps unsurprisingly took centre stage and were the main talking point of the day. Various manufactures had their shiny new pieces of kit on display and overall, there was a lot to take in. Of course the Heat Geek stand was one of the most popular – their latest innovations were certainly gaining plenty of attention (understandably), including a new ‘Blackbird’ heat pump for flat roofs.
We also attended a number of engaging talks and had the chance to chat with many likeminded individuals. A strong theme emerged throughout the event: renewables are now at the forefront of the industry. It has come a long way the past couple of years with manufactures and merchants leading the way with heat pumps and it was encouraging to see those who have dedicated their careers to pushing the industry forward being rewarded. The Installer Show once again proved to be a hub of innovation, inspiration, and connection – and we’re already looking forward to the next one.”
What the Installer Show Tells Us About the Industry in 2025
As Jenna noted, heat pumps were the headline act this year, not just because of new product drops, but because they reflect the wider transformation happening across the heating sector.
It’s no longer about if the shift to renewable heat will happen, it already is.
And that shift isn’t just limited to technology. The demand for accredited, hands-on training has grown just as rapidly. Installers today need more than product knowledge, they need confidence in system design, commissioning, and long-term customer care. And that’s exactly what we at GRE give them.
How GRE Is Responding
At GRE Energy Training, we’re continuously evolving our approach to ensure we’re preparing learners for the future, not just the present. In response to sector demand, we are:
- Expanding our renewable heating courses, including air source and ground source heat pump training, and a non-technical introduction to heat pumps course
- Upgrading our facilities to reflect real-world systems and scenarios
- Involving working installers in course development – ensuring our training is shaped by those out in the field
- Bridging the gap between qualification and confidence through practical, hands-on learning
Ready to Upskill?
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to futureproof your trade, there’s never been a better time to invest in your training. At GRE, we deliver trusted, nationally accredited qualifications that are respected across the industry, and more importantly, rooted in the real-world systems you’ll actually be working on.
All of our trainers are still active on the tools and up to date with the latest regs, so you won’t be learning from someone who’s out of touch, and doesn’t know what it’s like to get their hands covered in coolant.
