Solar & Storage Live 2025: What We Learned and Why It Matters
April 28, 2025In today’s blog, we take a look at the UK’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) expansion, a development that presents an opportunity for both consumers and professionals in the low-carbon heating sector. With rising demand for sustainable home heating and government proposals to widen the scheme’s scope, 2025 could be a transformative year for heat pump installers.
At GRE Energy Training, we’re not just relaying the headlines, we’re helping professionals stay ahead of them. With our hands-on, accredited training and a new allocation of £500 heat pump training vouchers, now is the ideal time to upskill.
The Latest Developments in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
In April, the government launched a public consultation aimed at expanding the BUS. Among the proposals under review is the inclusion of additional technologies, such as air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries. These systems could become eligible for the same £7,500 grant currently available for air and ground source heat pumps. This is especially relevant for homes where traditional heat pump systems may not be a viable option due to space constraints.
Another notable proposal is the introduction of leasing models and instalment-based financing options to help reduce the upfront cost of heat pump installations (which as we all appreciate can be costly for consumers.) These changes would make low-carbon heating more accessible to a wider range of homeowners, resulting in a larger, more diverse market for qualified installers.
Perhaps most compelling is the sharp rise in BUS activity. March 2025 saw over 4,000 grant applications submitted (an 88% increase from the previous year.) This points to a rapidly shifting consumer consensus and appetite for low-carbon heating solutions, driven by financial support and growing awareness of the long-term benefits.
The Installer Opportunity
As the scheme grows, so too does the need for qualified professionals. With new technologies potentially becoming eligible, and demand for installations rising, there’s a clear incentive for heating engineers, plumbers, and gas registered installers to diversify their services. Whether you’re new to heat pumps or looking to formalise your experience with certification, now is the time to take action.
Training in air and ground source heat pump systems positions you to meet this demand, and ensures your business stays relevant in an increasingly net-zero-driven marketplace.
£500 Heat Pump Training Vouchers Are Back
To support installers preparing for this growing demand, GRE has secured another allocation of £500 training vouchers, in collaboration with Net Zero Hub. These can be used toward our BPEC Air & Ground Source Heat Pump Systems Course or BPEC Air Source Heat Pump Systems Course, both covering the design, installation, and maintenance of heat pump systems.
This course is also recognised as a demonstration of competence for MCS registration, a valuable asset as the industry continues to professionalise.
With the voucher applied, you can become a certified installer from as little as £165 + VAT.
Why Train with GRE?
