Installer Show 2024 – Key Takeaways
June 28, 2024The Election Two Weeks On
July 17, 2024The 2024 election is over, and as we all expected Labour won with a significant majority vote. Whether this was the outcome you wanted or not, one thing has been cemented in their victory, and that is the continued growth of the renewable energy market. Keir Starmer has placed an emphasis on decarbonising the grid by 2030, which will of course heavily impact the solar market. However, other sectors of the industry such as renewable heating are also expected to grow significantly. In today’s blog, we will take an in depth look at the implications of our new government’s policies on the market, and as always how you can benefit as an installer.
The government has pledged to decarbonise the grid by 2030, and therefore are expected to publish their roadmap to achieve these ambitious targets, with time being of the essence. This roadmap will include an outline of how Labour will work with the private sector to deliver 50 gigawatts of solar capacity by the above mentioned date, and 20GW of solar and 8GW of battery by the end of 2024. This is a huge increase on the current capacity, and means that more qualified installers will be needed to deliver the pledge of decarbonisation.
Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK, said the government needs to “ embrace solar by making swift ministerial decisions on nationally significant solar projects, mandating solar on new homes and revamping the Solar Taskforce’s draft Solar Roadmap to align with the ambitious goal of 50GW of solar capacity by 2030.”
Organisations across the board are calling for action from the government to implement policies to help reach the targets highlighted in their manifesto, and embellish any uncertainty around whether renewable energy is here to stay. As we have touched upon before, it has been our previous governments contradictory actions that have led customers and installers to remain on the fence about making the renewable switch. However, Labour has too much on the line to not implement its net zero plan, and therefore the growth of the market is as certain as its ever been.
This market growth, will create an abundance of jobs for installers of solar PV, electric energy storage systems, and renewable heating systems such as heat pumps, with the heat pump market expected to reach a CAGR 11.10% between now and 2029 (which is likely to increase further with Labour’s victory.) Take action and become future proof as an installer by qualifying in the installation of renewable technologies at GRE.
