In today’s blog, we take a look at recent developments relating to ‘dynamic energy pricing’ and what it may mean for the market as a whole. Before we delve into an analysis of the market, it is important to establish what it actually is. Dynamic pricing (in this instance) refers to the fluctuating cost of electricity, depending on the time of day in which it is consumed. The way this is executed varies depending on the software used, with some opting for more fixed time periods (for example only paying a premium between say 4pm-7pm) and others for a more ‘dynamic’ approach with consistently changing costs (for example changing every 30 minutes in accordance with the market.) In short, consumers should expect to pay a premium for electricity at certain times of the day, and a cheaper rate at others.
Impact on The Market:
Dynamic pricing presents an opportunity for installers and consumers alike, and a way to offset higher electricity costs experienced at certain times of the day, and even profit from lower costs experienced during others. The solution here is to install an Electric Energy Storage System (battery) in the home, accompanied by solar PV, to store the electricity to be used at different points of the day. In doing so, the consumer overcomes paying a premium price for electricity, and can also store electricity from cheaper times in the day to sell later at a higher rate. The subsequent impact on the market could be huge, as more people look at ways to offset the significantly higher costs experienced at peak times, and more installers are needed to meet the demand for solar PV and battery (EESS) systems.
